about

RE:UNITED heralds the return of the power duo Sue McKenzie (soprano and alto saxophones) and Haftor Medbøe (electric guitar and effects). Following a 15-year hiatus the two musicians regroup in presenting a freely improvised suite of burning intensity and emotive depth.

Amongst ten tracks inspired by the poetry of Christina Georgina Rossetti, Fragility Made Plain is a song title that alludes to personal struggles overcome and the mutual understanding arrived at to once again cohabit the creative space.

Recorded during a single session in October 2023 in the sonic splendor of Morningside United Church in Edinburgh, Scotland, the album is a coming together of two distinct voices in jazz and improvised music. The interplay between the two musicians exemplifies the challenges met in achieving the deeply felt empathy and trust that allows them to take the music to its limits in stretching listener expectation and instrumental capability to new and dizzying heights.

Sue McKenzie is a Yanagisawa UK and D’Addario Woodwinds Artist and performs with UK/US trio, Multifarious who have performed in Scotland, France, Croatia, the Netherlands and around the US. She has recorded for Delphian and Linn Records (and played support for Esbjörn Svensson Trio and Bill Frisell).

Haftor Medbøe has to date released 15 albums of original compositions with international collaborators including Espen Eriksen, Gunnar Halle (NO), Jacob Karlzon (SWE) and Fabio Giachino (IT). He is Professor of Music at Edinburgh Napier University, Scotland and is Founding Chair of the Scottish Jazz Archive.
